Minor in Technology Commercialization

This minor is intended for all undergraduate students of the College of Engineering. The minor consists of curriculum covering prototyping, commercialization, and business-related concepts. The minor exposes engineering majors to elements of technology commercialization with the relevant aspects of both entrepreneurship and commercialization within established enterprises. The minor is coupled with senior design experience. The minor will culminate in a business plan competition.
Includes one semester of internship; CEE 110 or EE 190 or ME 100/100L or CS 135, ECON 190, COM 101, EGG 307, EGG 460. MGT 305, CEE/ME/EE 497 or 498, CS 472. All courses included in the minor must be passed with grades of C or better.
Graduate Certificate in New Venture Management

The Graduate Certificate in New Venture Management is a 15 credit hour program open to those holding a bachelor's degree in any field who wish to learn the art and science of starting a new business at the graduate level of study.The program requires the following subjects:

MBA in New Venture Management

This concentration is designed to prepare students for the prospects of managing new ventures. Courses required for this concentration develop student skills in the following areas critical to new venture success: opportunity creation, recognition, evaluation and exploitation; resource gathering and leveraging through preemption, negotiation and
incentivizing; and, management of uncertainties through intelligence gathering, planning and adaptation to change. Whether the student eventually becomes an independent entrepreneur or corporate project manager or venture capitalist, he or she will have a greater ability to address the challenges that contemporary businesses have in creating new value and sustaining it.

Business tools and skills necessary to successfully start and operate a business. Focus on evaluation of new ventures, financial considerations, personnel issues, business operations, and legal considerations. Development of a business plan. Managing New Venture Funding
Financial issues facing entrepreneurial business ventures at all stages of their existence. Challenges students to build new skills through consideration of the following frameworks: Introduction and Opportunity assessment, operational aspects of finance related to entrepreneurial ventures, financing growth, and other entrepreneurial finance issues. Prerequisites: Admission to a business major/junior standing*, BUS 101, FIN 301. 3 credits.
FIN 480
Entrepreneurial Finance
Focuses on the financial concepts, issues, methods and industry practices relevant to entrepreneurial decision makers. Addresses a variety of topics including financial valuation, various sources of funds, structures and legal issues in arranging financing, the private and public venture capital markets, preparation of business plans, and the initial public offering process. Provides understanding of the segments of the capital markets specializing in start-ups and growth financing. Prerequisite: Admission to a business major/junior standing*, FIN 303, FIN 312. 3 credits.
MGT 302
Introduction to Small Business Management
Shows what is involved in forming, operating, and/or owning a small business. For those who work in a small business or want to start a small business. Prerequisites: Admission to a business major/junior standing*, BUS 101. 3 credits.
MGT 305
Applied Entrepreneurship
Internationally recognized course in partnership with NxLeveL and the Nevada Small Business Development Center for students who want to start and grow businesses. NxLeveL certified instructors cover entrepreneurial assessment, research, organization, marketing, financial planning, cash flow, and raising capital. Students will develop comprehensive business plans. Prerequisite: admission to a business major/junior standing. Course will not count as an elective for the entrepreneurship major. 3 credits.
MGT 493
Small Business Consultation
Students act as consultants to approved Small Business Administration firms and prepare necessary Small Business Administration reports required by faculty. S/F grading only. Prerequisites: Second semester senior*. 3-6 credits.

New Venture Creation
Concerned with development of the business tools and skills necessary to successfully create an entrepreneurial venture. Focus includes evaluation of new venture opportunities, obtaining capital and other resources, personnel issues, business operations, and legal considerations. Students will prepare and present a business plan.
Prerequisite: Completion of the core MBA curriculum or approval of the
Director of MBA programs.

Managing Entrepreneurial Organizations
Developing and managing entrepreneurial organizations. Examines why firms succeed or fail; growth and organizational effectiveness; management systems; and entrepreneur transition. Prerequisites: Completion of the

Seminar in Negotiation
Enhances students’ abilities to use negotiation as a tool for managing conflict, making deals, and making team decision. Examines important aspects of the negotiation process, including preparations, strategies and tactics, international issues, the role of third parties, and ethical issues. Prerequisites: Completion of MBA core curriculum or approval of the Director of MBA Programs.
MGT 712
Change Management
Change management is the process of transforming an organization’s operations to enhance individual and organizational effectiveness. Both the rate of change and its importance to senior management seem to be accelerating. Examines competing models of change, considers various
change methodologies, and explores examples of best practice. Prerequisites: Completion of MBA core curriculum or approval of the Director of MBA Programs.
